I’ve been African American my whole life. But growing up I didn’t know what it really meant to be African American. I knew my family was from America and that somewhere down the line my ancestors were enslaved and brought from Africa to America. I thought that’s all there was to it. By no means was I in touch with black culture and history.
I remember being in elementary school and not knowing one other person who was soley African American like me. When people asked me my nationality and I replied with African American. They would say that’s it or so you’re just black ? As if my nationality was such a disappointment to them. This made me think am I really just black ? So then I began to ask questions to my parents, grandparents, any one with answers. I have a great grandmother who was born in Cuba. But there’s nothing Cuban about my family and I. Ya know ? So yes I am just African American and there’s nothing wrong with that.
Secondly, I thought that African Americans had no culture. I felt that our culture had been completely overshadowed and mixed with white american culture and that it had been lost through slavery. After all that’s what they teach you in school. But now I know better than that. If you think hip hop and soul food are all there is to black culture you have some research to do. African Americans are beautiful, intellectual, and diverse people. We are a creative group of people. One of my proffessor at Hampton University once said Blacks are the “trendsetters” in America. In fact, we are much more than the media portrays us to be. We have our own foods, music, customs and traditions like everyone else. It is astonishing when I realize150 years ago African American were seen as property and now we have a Black President.
I think tumblr has definitely enhanced my appreciate for black culture. You can see anything on here from pictures of the Black Panthers to photographs displaying black love. These blogs bring light to this “hidden culture” of ours. So, thank you tumblr for allowing African Americans to share our stories thanks for letting me share my story.
